    Update!

I have been using the blog to keep up with spelling and notes.I would like to take a minute to talk to you about some of the things we have been doing in 5th grade.

In reading we have been working on a lot of vocabulary and comprehension skills. We have worked with characters and setting, plot and characters, fact and opinion, drawing inferences, cause and effect, problem and solution, and a few others. There is a graphic organizer to help the students organize their thoughts. We carry these skills into our guided reading groups.

Math has been a roller coaster ride. One day we will have a concept that the students easily grasp and the next is a more difficult one. With our math series it does allow for many opportunities for practice and re-teaching.We do re-teaching in whole group setting and individually.

I am very excited about how our Social Studies has been going.I have been teaching the students how to take Power Notes. It is basically showing them how to pick out the main ideas and the details about those main ideas. At first I was giving them the notes to write down. Then they were given fill in the blank notes and then our last Social Studies class I was their secretary. The students told me what to put down for the notes!I was so proud of them.

We have been learning a lot about computers this year.We have computers every Monday and I have been teaching them how to use Microsoft Word. They have learned how to change the color, size, and font. They have also learned how to highlight and insert pictures. We have also been doing a lot on Odyssey.Odyssey has proven to be a wonderful tool.We have been using it in reading class, math class, and language class. The students can write stories, submit them to me, and I can check them and return them to the students! It is so amazing seeing the work the students are doing on their stories!

I know this is a lot, but I wanted to share some of the things that I am excited about in 5th grade!
