There are going to be a few changes in 5th grade.The class needs to start taking more pride in their work.They need to make sure that they are always doing their best on their assignments, completing the entire assignment, and getting the assignment done on time.
What I have been doing is giving full credit for late assignments and keeping students inside for recess to give them time to finish missing work.
Starting Thursday, January 5 your student will have a detention if they have 2 or more missing assignments.Detentions will be held on Thursday nights until 4:30.They will be responsible for calling you to tell you they have a detention, and you will be responsible for picking up your child.There will not be transportation for your child home.
Starting Monday, Dec. 12, for every day an assignment is late they will miss 1 point.So if the assignment is worth 10 points, it is 3 days late, and they get all the answers correct, they only get 7 points.
For now I have taken away doing redos in Math.It seems that students have gotten more concerned with getting the assignment done so they didn't have to take it home, rather than trying to do their best the first time.They were starting to rely on redoing the assignment if they had done poorly.Some students have learned the hard way that they need to ask more questions.I want the students to be asking questions while doing practice problems and during their work time.There is time set aside every day to work on their math assignments.
